MTR 1924, St. Marks Road

MTR is a name most of us are familiar with and their outlet on St. Marks road has been a favourite since a long time now. I have been there innumerable times and never been disappointed with food or service.

So I felt compelled to write this piece for those fellow Bangaloreans who haven’t been to MTR yet 🙂

The Flying Squirrel, Koramangala

The Flying Squirrel” is a small cafe located right above ‘Asia Kitchen’ in Koramangala, and in a short time it has garnered great reviews for its brews.

We dropped in for coffee over a weekend and the place was buzzing. Menu here has a long list of different kinds of brews, and while we both enjoy coffee, none of us is an expert. So instead of choosing one of their brews, we asked for a Vietnamese cold coffee, a black coffee on the rocks and a slice of their freshly baked lemon cake.

Bathinda Junction, HSR

On the last day of pujo, we went for a dinner takeaway to Bathinda Junction. The place has a dhaba like setup with charpais(woven rope beds) etc. It was completely packed when we reached and there was a queue even for takeaway.

The restaurant has too many tables and charpais crammed into a small area. There isn’t much to the decor apart from a few photos of Punjabi singers/actors, but they do have loud Punjabi music playing in the background.

The Hole in the Wall Cafe, Koramangala

This legendary place called ‘The Hole in the Wall Cafe‘ had been on my list forever and I never got to visit it due to the never-ending queues there. The place doesn’t take reservations and parking is a hassle, which doesn’t help the case either!

So the other day when this place popped up on my Swiggy app, I was very happy and we both decided to order from there. They have a superb breakfast menu as well as lots of burgers/sandwiches to choose from. I placed an order for a grilled double chicken sandwich, big ‘shrooms & onions sandwich and a portion of hash browns.

Pabrai’s Fresh & Naturelle Icecreams, HSR Layout

I am going to start off this blog with a little info on a particular type of jaggery called ‘Nolen gur’. It is also known as ‘Notun (new/fresh) gur(jaggery)’ or ‘Khejur (date palm, not to be confused with palmyra tree) gur’ and is prepared only in winters. It is available in semisolid state when freshly prepared, and also sold in its solidified form as circular/oval disks called ‘Patali(vaguely translates to solid disk) gur’.

I am pretty sure most Bongs have a weakness for this taste. 🙂 As for me, mere mention of this name brings back sweet memories from winter holidays in my village. Though I haven’t had nolen gur for a while now, I still remember the grainy gooey texture and its unparalleled rich taste. And how Boro Ma (great-grandmother) used to give me spoonfuls of it on demand, without anyone noticing 🙂

612 East, Indiranagar

There was a lot of hype about this new lounge called 612 East in Indiranagar, even before it started functioning. I had added it to my list and a couple of days back while crossing Indiranagar, we decided to drop by and check it out.

The lounge is spread across three floors and we straightaway went to the terrace. It was a beautiful area with comfortable couches and looked like the perfect place to unwind. But it was just around three in the afternoon and hot outside, so we descended to one of the lower floors and took a table inside.

Midnight Mania, Koramangala

It’s great to have more options in the city now a days for satisfying late night hunger pangs. I found this place called ‘Midnight Mania’ on Zomato while looking for a quick takeaway after a late movie in Koramangala.

The place is located at the same location as Hangout Cafe, but is a little difficult to spot since there are no lights outside. I had called them beforehand for a takeaway of mushroom punch thin crust pizza, so we didn’t have to wait for long after reaching the place.
