I was craving for some sushi this weekend and Teppan seemed like a great choice. Teppan literally translates to “iron plate”, that is used for stir frying in Japanese cuisine. The eatery is located on the 3rd floor of the same building that houses two more popular restaurants- Benjarong and Ente Keralam.
The restaurant has an understated elegance and calm about it. The decor consists of simple but classy wooden furniture, lovely paintings and some pretty geisha dolls.
It has set menus as well as à la carte. There are numerous options for sushi here and if you are a vegetarian, don’t fret because there are countless veggie options too 🙂
We opted for à la carte since the set menus didn’t have sushi and udon, and ordered for sake(salmon) maki and oishi kyuuri(Japanese cucumber) maki. There was an interesting cocktail menu too and we placed an order for paradise garden and another cocktail whose name I cant recall now.
Shake maki: Makis were tiny, but tasted absolutely divine. Salmon was exquisite and the presentation beautiful. I loved the delicately flavoured rice and their pungent wasabi too.
Oishii kyuru maki: This was delicious too. The tempura batter added a nice crunch to the dish. Delectable flavours and a must try for vegetarians.
Cocktails: Even though we had requested for less sugar in our cocktails, they still turned out to be quite sweet. I think it’s high time I stop experimenting and stick to the classics when it comes to cocktails! None of them had that zing and just tasted like sugary mocktails with artificial flavours.
For main course we both asked for yaki udon(stir fried Japanese udon noodles), one veg and another with chicken. Noodles were probably house made and tasted delicious. But again, the portions were quite small.
The soy based sauce used for preparing the dish was delicious. Noodles were perfectly done and so were the vegetables and chicken.
We did have a nice meal, but unfortunately the portions were not filling. It’s definitely an excellent place for sushi but if you are hungry, plan accordingly and order for more portions.
