It’s hard to reach a consensus at home when everyone wants to have something different for dinner 😀 Yesterday night, “Sizzling Monk” came to our rescue; it had something to please everyone’s tastbuds. The place has recently opened(not more than a week old I suppose) and boasts of an interesting menu which has everything from Chinese, pizza, pasta to sizzlers, shakes etc.
It’s good to see HSR Layout rapidly evolving as a foodie’s delight. I always used to complain about it not having enough places that serve good Chinese food, but it’s not the case anymore, thanks to places like Sizzling Monk. Before entering here, I also spotted a ‘Cream & Fudge’ outlet right next to it and decided to have desserts there post dinner 😀
The place looked bright and cheerful with lots of hanging bulbs and a very tempting ‘Cream n fudge’ ice cream counter. The place was not very crowded when we went, and we got a table of our choice. I’m a lousy photographer, because unlike the picture, the counter looked really nice.
Some discussions followed on soups and appetizers. and when after 10 minutes we still hadn’t decided upon anything, Mr. H took over and placed an order for sweet corn soup, manchow soup, veg chilly garlic sticks and sizzling monk cauliflower. Our server had considerable difficulty using the tab being used to place orders, but he finally managed it and our order also arrived soon.
Manchow soup looked delicious with loads of chopped veggies, tofu and mushrooms. It had just the right amount of heat and spices, and everyone loved it.
Sweet corn soup tasted good too. Sizzling monk cauliflower tasted delicious, but was a bit too pungent for our taste. The unanimous favourite at our table was veg chilly garlic sticks. They had a slightly crunchy exterior and loaded with flavour, I absolutely loved the sauce in which they were tossed.
By now, the place was packed and we decided to place our orders for main course. We were a group of five, among whom I was the only non-vegetarian, so we placed an order for burnt garlic veg fried rice, veg hakka noodles, assorted veggies in sweet & sour sauce, thai yellow curry(veg), and a fungi chicken sizzler.
Part of our order arrived soon and the quantities looked good. Assorted veggies had a garlic sauce instead of sweet & sour sauce, but it tasted really good, so none of us complained about the goof up 🙂 Noodles took some more time, and everyone loved it. Mr. H was all praises about it and said it was cooked and spiced perfectly.
My sizzler arrived when everyone else was almost done with their food 😦 It tasted really good though, mushroom sauce was creamy and delicious and I loved the sauteed mushrooms too. Chicken was tender and perfectly done. The quantity of grilled chicken was quite big and they were not stingy with the sauce. There was a layer of caramelized onions at the bottom, which tasted yum. Highly recommended.
After enquiring multiple times about the Thai curry, some crackers followed by green curry and rice arrived at our table. Everyone was commenting on the fact that we had ordered a yellow curry and I didn’t take notice until someone complained that the crackers tasted a bit off. And then to everyone’s horror, I discovered that they were prawn crackers and curry was chicken and not veg! I was appalled at the extent of their carelessness, serving chicken to vegetarians is completely unacceptable. The place was completely packed by now, and we had a somewhat tough time explaining to the servers what went wrong with the curry. One of them agreed to get us veg yellow curry quickly, and after 15 minutes another green curry arrived. I again told them that we had asked for a yellow curry and not green, and cancelled the order.
Apart from the mishap with the last curry, we had an excellent dinner. The place definitely has some teething issues, e.g. I noticed there was a shortage of menu cards. They also need better trained staff.
Having said all that, the food is excellent here and we will definitely go back for more; I intend to try out their pizzas also next time 🙂
